Hydrophobic / Hydrophilic coatings
With the application of certain solutions based on nanoparticles, can be achieved hydrophobic or hydrophilic surfaces, such as found in the nature: i.e. the structures of butterfly wings, lotro leaf and the legs of some insects. All these examples are treated non-wetting surfaces on which the raindrop not wet the surface and running through it quickly, while the dust particles are not deposited on its surface.
This property of self-cleaning surfaces hydrophobic (contact angle greater than 100°) could be applied to daily life by providing protection to products and surfaces.
The phenomenon is explained by the fact that the drop of water can not penetrate the micro / nano structures and wet the surface and angles that have very high or very low contact.
Materials with photocatalytic properties
Through a sequence of chemical reactions initiated by sunlight, there are additives such as TiO2 or FeO which are capable of degrading NOx and NO molecules. Proper formulation of the raw materials used allows for new cement mortars and paints highly efficient for decontamination of urban atmospheres, and the creation of self-cleaning surfaces.
Phase change materials (PCM) for temperature control in textile applications and paints
PCM is a thermal storage which is incorporated encapsulated as additive to materials in various applications such as construction and textile. The product allows to control the temperature inside providing a thermal equilibrium.
If the temperature rises above the phase change temperature, specified during manufacture, the wax melts within the microcapsules and absorbs excess heat. If the temperature falls, the wax solidifies and the capsules release their heat. Laurentia offers solutions silica encapsulated PCM both paints / coatings to textiles.
There are two products that can be implemented mainly in building materials and furnishings for biocidal properties: silver nanoparticles and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, TiO2 in its anatase crystalline phase.
Surfaces containing TiO2 nanoparticles has additional properties such as self-clean organic stains (eg. Grafittis), decontamination of NOX gases released by cars and industries and are highly hydrophilic surfaces which facilitates the flushing of the surfaces.
